The National Reading Days '25

The Challenge.

How do you emphasize the importance of multilingual reading aloud in a way that is both informative and emotionally engaging? For the third consecutive year, Stichting CPNB asked me to direct and edit a video centered around the National Reading Days.

This time featuring the Picture Book of the Year: Rinus.

The brief: create a dynamic video that appeals to a broad audience and shows how multilingual reading aloud can enrich children.

Working with Rutger was an absolute pleasure, and the result turned out truly beautiful. As a participant in the video, I’m proud of how everything comes together: the colors, the lighting, the sound, and the editing. The responses on LinkedIn have been overwhelmingly positive!

Müzeyyen Çolak-Uysal

The Approach.

The recordings took place at Utrecht Library: a carefully chosen location that feels both familiar and visually appealing. The video focuses on a conversation between Müzeyyen Çolak-Uysal and translator Çiğdem Yalman Kopan, which flows into a beautiful read-aloud moment. Çiğdem reads Rinus to a child in her native language.

As the director, I consciously chose a cinematic approach. Hero shots of the book and illustrations provide visual appeal, while dynamic camera movements and warm lighting enhance the atmosphere. The balance between content, aesthetics, and emotion was central to the process. I was responsible for directing and editing, and also guided the flow of the conversation and the rhythm of the storytelling on set. This resulted in a video that tells the story on multiple levels.

The Result.

The video was widely distributed through the channels of Stichting CPNB and Stichting Lezen, generating over 10,000 views, more than 200 interactions, and positive feedback from the education and library sectors.

Curious what your story could evoke on screen — and how I can help bring it to life?
