Short Branded Documentary

Barry's
story

The Challenge.
You want the very best for those left behind. Loss can strike unexpectedly, but financial uncertainty can be prevented. So how do you address this sensitive topic in an authentic way?

For Dazure, I directed a short branded documentary about Barry Broertjes, a firefighter who lost his wife, best friend, and a close friend in a short period of time. His story shows how you can rise again after immense loss – and the role financial security plays in that process.
This brought tears to my eyes. So powerful.
Barry Vermeeren, Communications at Dazure

The Approach.

The film needed to feel intimate and authentic. That’s why I chose a pure, unfiltered style. Personal scenes at Barry’s home contrast with powerful shots at the fire station. To draw the viewer into the story, sound design played a key role.I was responsible for concept, direction, and storytelling, working closely with a cinematographer and editor to strike the right tone.

The key to this film’s success was my connection with Barry. From our very first conversation, we built a bond that made him feel comfortable sharing his story on camera. This foundation of trust was the essential building block for a powerful and compelling film.
The Result.

The film made a deep impact: with over 90,000 views across all platforms, more than 1,800 clicks to the campaign page, and strong online engagement, the documentary proved its strength. The story was widely shared and received national recognition in industry media such as AMweb, InFinance and VVP.
